August Proved that Alignment is More Important than Balance

Family First (and Dentistry)

This month was heavy on dentistry. I had a 20-year-old cap replaced. Kate had a root canal. Harper had his wisdom teeth out. Auden skated by with just a cavity. Not glamorous, but real life.

Family also meant movement. Driving Auden back to Boulder for his senior year was one of my favorite things we do together. Sixteen hours in the car, just the two of us. Steakhouse in Amarillo, Holiday Inn Express in Lamar. Talking, laughing, connecting. In Boulder, we hiked, plunged in the river, caught a Rockies game, and had dinner with friends. Those moments are the real currency. The little things really are the big things.

From there, I flew to California to meet Kate and Harper for his LMU move-in. A zillion Target runs. Renting a little house for us. Eating our way through Venice, Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach. Gjelina, Gjusta, Great White, Proper Hotel, Erewhon. Finding a killer old school gym, SixPax in Culver City. We made memories. Upon re-entry back home in Houston, we also felt the weight of the transition; our house is quiet now. Too quiet. We’re leaning into it and focusing on us as a couple.

Fitness Anchors

Every Friday, I boxed. I love the rhythm of it. When I’m consistent, I feel sharper. Same with XPT pool workouts; they’re fun, challenging, and restorative. Three strength sessions a week feels like the right dose. More isn’t better. Better is better. It’s enough to keep me strong, while leaving time to do the activities I enjoy most.

I’m still in physical therapy, still frustrated with my left shoulder, but showing up anyway. I upgraded my plunge after finally killing the old chiller from overuse. Sauna, cold, movement; these continue to be my anchors.

Finance Moves

I pulled my investment from a venture fund where I lost trust in the founder. A reminder that trust is everything. Now I’m figuring out where to redeploy the capital with more alignment.

I also signed three new coaching clients starting September 1st. The 1:1 work is deeply rewarding, weekly conversations with men who are ready to make meaningful changes. I’m honored to be part of their process.

Food Highlights

The best meals I ate in August were the Kobe Steak at RVR and the turkey sandwich at Gjelina in Venice. The Hummus platter at The Proper in Santa Monica. The Roast Chicken & Mussels at La Petit Framboise and the Branzino at Louie’s in Port Washington.

Fashion & Fresh Starts

I shaved my beard. I immediately wanted it back. Now, I start again.

I bought clothes. I like cheap things. I like expensive things. I value experiences more than things, but I like my things. The best things I bought in August were Alex Crane Linen T-Shirts. A Carhartt bucket hat. The Ventura Chore Pant from Imogene+Willie. Flint+Tinder 365 shorts. PF Flyers All American Hi-Top Sneakers.

Marriage as a Practice

Kate and I also interviewed three couples counselors this month and chose one. Now that the boys are out of the house, we want to prioritize our marriage in new ways; weekly sessions to strengthen communication, connection, and closeness. The house is just the two of us now. We have to be the priority.

Fun, Music & Friends

Music and friends filled the gaps. Kate & I took our first 60-minute breathwork class with my buddy Jeff Scult. Saw Counting Crows, Gaslight Anthem, and Psychedelic Furs. Boated around Long Island with friends and went to the US Open after a 10 year hiatus to see some tennis.

Growth & Gratitude

We crossed 25,000 subscribers here at Midlife Male. I’ve always believed quality over quantity. But it feels good to know we’re reaching more men every week. We’re still just getting started.

The conversations this month were rich; I love doing these interviews. It’s how I learn and continue to learn. Mike Lazerow, Steve Martocci, Dan Gluck, Bart Foster, Dr. James Kuan, Ron Speaker, Chef Mark Allison, Jim Curtis. I’m grateful to them for the access, and sharing their insights, advice, experience and helping me maximize midlife. I hope they help you too. FINAL REFLECTIONS

August reminded me that midlife isn’t about balance; it’s about alignment. Some days it’s dentists and physical therapy, other days it’s boxing, concerts, and road trips with the boys. All of it belongs. Progress comes not from perfection but from choosing better, consistently, across the 6Fs. Family, fitness, finance, food, fashion, and fun; these are the levers. The work is to keep showing up, investing in what matters most, and creating momentum. That’s how we maximize midlife. That’s how we win.

Now it’s your turn. Take a look back at your own August. Where did you show up across your 6Fs? Where did you create momentum? And where can you choose better in September?

Family → What’s one memory from this month with your family that you’ll carry forward?

Fitness → Did your training add energy to your life, or did it drain you? What needs adjusting?

Food → What meals or moments around food felt most connected or joyful?

Fashion → How did you present yourself this month? Did it reflect who you really are right now?

Fun → What’s the most fun you had in August—and how can you create more of it in September?

BTW, this took me 20 minutes to write because every one of these events and experiences was on my calendar! All I had to do was start at 8/1 and jot it all down thru 8/31. Show me your calendar, I’ll show you your priorities. It’s that simple.
