A few days ago, I read a piece by Michael Clinton about how more people want to work longer—ditching retirement, staying professionally active into their 70s and beyond.

Now, I’ve got nothing but respect for Michael. Smart guy. Great book. But I see it differently: We’re over-indexing on work. And it’s killing us.

Last week, I got a DM on Instagram:

“Hey bro. Wanna come on my podcast? Would love to have you on.”

Now, mind you, I don’t know this guy. No previous interaction, no mutual connections. I do a quick scan of his profile—limited followers, minimal engagement, nothing that tells me what his podcast is about…

I saw this article on Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat for those of you who may not be familiar. It was about him getting fit in his 50s. Now he’s everywhere, on the cover of Men’s Fitness, and other health publications, showcasing his shocking transformation.

For years, every Sunday morning I’d flip open the local paper, breeze through the sports and entertainment sections and then I’d wrap up by reading the obituaries. Yeah, the obituaries. I know, it sounds a little morbid. Maybe it is. But there’s something about reading those final summaries of a life—especially a father’s life—that hits you in the gut and reminds you that your time on this earth is short-lived, no matter how long you actually live. 

We don’t bury the lead here at MLM. We don’t do clickbait. We don’t do filler. What we do is tell you the truth, straight up, and in this case, the shortest version of this column can be told in three words:

Mouth taping works.

I doubted it. I thought it was goofy. I thought it looked dumb.

I am returning to the CD-filled, DVD-ruled, paperbacked and glossy-covered glory of the 80s and 90s and you’re coming with me. Good news: You don’t need a flux capacitor, a DeLorean, or Dr. Emmett L. Brown’s genius to get there. Nope. You just need to take a moment to remember how great our entertainment lives used to be and realize you can take it all back. 

I was introduced to today’s guest, former Navy SEAL Rich Diviney, by my good friend Paul Epstein. Paul is an author and speaker who is making a massive impact in his own right, and like Rich, he has a gift for connecting with people. That’s how these things happen. You are a product of your network.

Last week, I sat down with Jason Khalipa for a Midlife Male Inner Circle interview.

Back in my CrossFit days, Khalipa was a beast, a legend. Now he’s about to turn 40, and I’m closing in on 53. When I hit 40, I was fired up to be in the “Masters” division, the youngest in the 40–44 bracket. I’d do the CrossFit Open and check my rankings in my age group, my region, the country, even the world. I held my own.
