How I See It: My Top Five Selections of the Year
Our ‘How I See It’ series goes deep with leading midlife men and women across various industries.
When MLM’s Editor in Chief, Jon Finkel, asked me to pick my top five “How I See It” interviews from 2024, I knew I was in for a challenge.
Every conversation we’ve had this year could easily make the list. That’s the beauty of this platform—we only feature people we truly want to hear from. We’re not obligated to anyone; we’re drawn to individuals who are insightful, intriguing, and different from ourselves. These are people with unique experiences and wisdom that inspire us to grow. They also share areas of expertise that can drastically help the lives of midlife men, from improving sleep to understanding testosterone to tackling fitness and more.
After much deliberation, I narrowed it down to these five, listed in no particular order:
Dr. Michael Breus
One of our most recent cover stories tackled a topic close to my heart: sleep. Good sleep is invaluable, yet it’s a daily struggle for many of us dealing with the pressures, stresses, and anxieties of middle age. What stood out in my conversation with Dr. Breus was his relatable, jargon-free approach. He’s not just an expert; he’s also a husband, father, and man navigating the same challenges as the rest of us.
Dr. Breus debunked common myths about sleep and provided practical, stress-reducing advice. Ironically, stressing over getting a good night’s sleep often prevents it—something he helped me understand and manage. This conversation was a reminder that we’re all in this together, even the experts. Read our interview here.
Dr. Gabrielle Lyon
I’m a huge fan of Dr. Lyon, both personally and professionally. I included her on this list because of the immense impact she’s had on my perspective this year. Gabrielle embodies what she teaches—whether as a doctor, wife, mother, or friend. Her straightforward, science-backed insights on strength and health are transformative. She’s changed how I think about proactive care, and I’ve come to value the importance of having someone like her in your corner. Read our interview here.
Don Saladino
Don is the definition of a guy’s guy, and I’m proud to call him a friend. I first met him at ‘Strong New York’ last year, and he was everything I’d hoped for. Training at his barn and spending time with him and his family has been one of the year’s highlights.
Don exemplifies the value of mastering the basics. In a world obsessed with biohacking and shortcuts, his focus on fundamentals is refreshing. He’s a reminder that success in fitness—and in life—comes from discipline, consistency, and a willingness to put in the work. Read our interview here.
Chip Conley
Chip’s approach to midlife is as unique as it is inspiring. He’s addressing the challenges of aging with an open heart and a generous spirit. Chip has dedicated his time, resources, and wisdom to help others, often asking for nothing in return. Despite battling cancer, he exudes grace and dignity, focusing on lifting others rather than dwelling on his own struggles. His example is a powerful testament to the impact one person can have when they lead with purpose and compassion. Read our interview here.
Michael Clinton
Michael Clinton represents who I want to be in a decade. In his sixties, he’s living life to the fullest—traveling the world, writing for Esquire and Men’s Health, and tackling new adventures. He balances style and substance effortlessly, prioritizing health, relationships, and longevity.
Michael’s zest for life and leadership across industries is inspiring. When I look at him, I see a roadmap for what’s possible as we age, and I can confidently say: that’s the kind of person I aspire to become. Read our interview here.
Unlock 2024 Clarity with This Simple Phone Strategy I Use
I woke up 52 years old on Monday of last week, and this past year has been one of the most challenging of my life. That’s my gut reaction to the proverbial question: “How was 2024 for you?”
Like so many of us, I tend to dwell on the negatives, skipping over the good times—the serene moments, the “regular” days that actually make up a good life. But over the years, I’ve developed a little ritual to reflect on the past twelve months. It’s simple, and I do it at the end of the year, which also happens to be near my birthday.
The tool I use isn’t anything fancy. No cutting-edge app or AI bot. Just the photo app on my phone. That’s it.
For me, my photo app is a visual journal of my year. So, on my birthday (or for you, maybe in late December), I sit down with a cup of coffee, scroll through my calendar and photos, and take it all in. I smile at the high points—of which there were many—and sometimes fight back tears as I revisit the low points.
Life doesn’t get easier; we just get better at handling it. I’ve written and repeated that line many times over the years. It holds up.
I’m not one to dwell on the past—I’m not going that way—but today, as birthday messages came pouring in, I found myself taking stock anyway. I still consider myself a slow learner and a late bloomer, just now realizing that I can have all I need while still going after all I want.
As I went through my photos, looking at milestones I could post or write about, I realized something important: those big, “look-at-me” moments aren’t the ones that matter most. The moments that truly matter are the quiet ones in between.
The ones not captured by a phone, but by my heart: the knowing glance from my wife when no one else understands; the hand on my shoulder from my son; the unexpected call from a friend with no agenda; the hug from my other son, who guards his affection so carefully.
Millions of stories are posted online every day and 99.9% are noise. We sift through the nonsense for quality recommendations in each of our six Fs (Family, Fitness, Finance, Food, Fashion, Fun) to help you think, grow and maximize your midlife starting now.

Jesse Itzler describes the concept of a Misogi as an event or accomplishment that you plan ahead of time that will define your upcoming year. Could be running your first marathon, starting a business, writing a book, hiking the equivalent of Mt. Everest… Something that you’ll look back on at the end of 2025 and say, “Hell yes, I DID THAT.”
