Why Sacha Baron Cohen’s Transformation Should Be Celebrated, Not Criticized

I saw this article on Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat for those of you who may not be familiar. It was about him getting fit in his 50s. Now he’s everywhere, on the cover of Men’s Fitness, and other health publications, showcasing his shocking transformation.

The story goes something like this: he got divorced in middle age from his wife and mother of his children (The super hot chick from Wedding Crashers, Isla Fisher) . Now, he’s gotten super fit in his 50s to play a superhero or supervillain in a Marvel movie or something like that… So naturally, the woke police are coming after him and if you can believe this, there are articles being written by women about taking shots at him; saying this isn’t desirable, that they prefer the dad bod and that he doesn't realize his “midlife post-divorce body is repellent to most women.” Basically: “What is he doing?” “He’s going overboard.” “Women don’t care about this or like this,” and  “this isn’t important.” And you know what?

It’s complete bullshit.

News flash, ladies:

I don’t believe he, or any of us men…

A Summer Dad Mini Golf Confession: Why We’re All Score-Obsessed Psychos

Fact: 100% of dads and granddads are out for blood on mini golf courses.

It’s summer and all across beach towns and vacation spots and different shores from Jersey to Hilton Head to Florida to San Diego and beyond, dads in “summer mode” are sauntering onto mini-golf courses with their flip flops and families for some “harmless” entertainment while we secretly want to dominate like it’s the damned Masters.

Sure, we act like we’re encouraging our kids or in-laws. We smile and say dumb stuff like “we’re just here to have fun”. And when you dink one into the windmill we say “you’ll get it next time” or if you bounce one next to the fake volcano maybe we’ll pat you on the back and say “you got it”.

We might even say “you’re playing great” to a family member knocking down a few 2s in a row, but on the inside, know this:

We want to crush you.

We want 18 holes-in-one while you shoot a million. We want you to know that in this goofy-ass game, with pirate ship’s planks and curvy greens and holes in the bottom of lighthouses, that we’re still the king. The man. The Tiger Woods of this family.

We act nonchalantly. We keep everyone going in the right order. We jot down scores. We pretend it’s just casual and a breezy family night out.

But we quietly know EXACTLY how your front nine is going. We know how many shots we’re ahead. We know if our 14-year-old son or 8-year-old or 77-year-old mom is within striking distance.

Here’s a fun fact…

‘How I See It’ with Dan Gluck

Dan Gluck first got on my radar when I was a partner in an insurance and risk management firm, specializing in consumer products. I was at the beginning of my own personal health and wellness journey and wanted to connect with successful players in the space. Dan’s name kept popping up.

He was a founder and partner at PowerPlant Ventures, which had capitalized and invested in several of the brands I was using, enjoying, and benefiting from. I thought the company had incredible taste and an eye for talent. Dan seemed to be out there living his message, as a husband, father, athlete, investor, and provider. These were attributes that mattered to me and were becoming more important with each passing year.

So I tried calling Dan. I cold emailed him. I even looked for him at various trade shows and events, but no luck. I didn’t know anyone who knew him, and I got nowhere. Case closed, right? Not so fast.

Five years later, as fate would have it, I arrived at Snowbasin in Utah to take on my first 29029 Everesting Challenge. And who is standing in the buffet line when I walk in for dinner? Dan Gluck.

I walked up to him, introduced myself, and thanked him for never calling me back or emailing me - for making it tough. I told him, with complete confidence, that I had no agenda and no interest in selling him anything anymore. That part of my life was over. We talked. We chatted. He said, “Let’s do an ascent or two together.”

And we did. Nothing brings people together like shared suffering. By the end of those ascents, I had his cell phone number. He knew a few things about me. I knew a few things about him. And I knew he was someone I wanted to keep learning from.

Dan’s a winner: relatable, credible, and aspirational. From afar, I’ve watched his career continue to evolve. He rebranded PowerPlant Ventures into GroundForce Capital, embarked on a personal and professional growth mission, and started working with coaches and leadership teams. Our mutual friend Bart Foster and his BusinessOutside program became part of his journey. Dan has also become prolific on LinkedIn and has spoken at places like Stanford, sharing his experiences and perspectives on how he sees it.

As the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of GroundForce Capital, an investment management firm backing branded consumer and B2B companies that improve the health and longevity of people and the planet, Dan plays an active role in all aspects of the firm’s business—deal sourcing, diligence, portfolio management—and serves on the boards of Miyoko’s, Zico Rising, Your Super, Thistle, Jot Coffee, and Rae Wellness.

Before GroundForce, Dan co-founded Health Warrior, a plant-based superfood company acquired by PepsiCo in 2018. He previously spent 14 years as a Portfolio Manager and Partner at Weiss Multi-Strategy Advisers, a hedge fund.

Dan lives in Mill Valley, CA, with his wife and two children. He’s a lifelong athlete and endurance competitor, often found running, mountain biking, or hiking with his family. You’re going to love our conversation. Please enjoy Dan Gluck’s ‘How I See It’:

The Parenting Pendulum Swings Back

We’re far from the softest parents around (and also far from the harshest). This Wall Street Journal article titled “Goodbye Gentle Parenting, Hello, F**k Around and Find Out” is worth a read. There’s a shift happening: more parents are moving away from the overly soft approach that’s dominated the past few years and embracing firmer, more structured parenting. Check it out and let us know what you think.

The MLM-Approved Strength Training Split

How many days should you strength train in midlife? Loaded question. Greg is currently on a three-day full-body split. It works because between family, career, travel, and everything else, it’s manageable. Plus, with full-body workouts, you don’t have to worry about missing “back & bi’s” because you’re hitting everything each session.

Pair this workout with walking, rucking, yoga, swimming, cycling or whatever keeps you moving. And don’t forget recovery.

Want to try it?

Here’s the essential MLM-approved program that Greg is using right now.

Redefining “Rich” in Midlife

“Having enough money to do what you want, when you want, with who you want, for as long as you want.”

The above is the official MLM definition of wealth.

There’s a wide gap between not earning enough and earning so much that you die at your desk. I once worked with a guy who said, “I haven’t been out of the office for more than two weeks in nine years.” I asked, “Are you telling me that with pride… or regret?”

More men are opting for mini-retirements, stepping away for a year, taking sabbaticals, spending real time with family.
That’s real wealth. Read more.

Let Your Dog Go Wild at Mealtime

Snacks are sacred around here, but just as important as what we eat is what we feed our dogs.

We’ve been using We Feed Raw for almost a year: complete and balanced raw food made specifically for dogs. The difference? More energy, shinier coats, calmer temperaments, and yes, better poop.

Our dogs are healthier, happier, and go wild at mealtime. Check out this special offer for Midlife Male subscribers.

Beards, Barbells and Better Style

The best way to find your style? Do a little homework. Follow guys whose style feels like you. How? Find guys with similar builds, hair, and lifestyles.

Lately, I’ve been digging Aaron Levine’s vibe. He’s got a great beard (I’m growing mine out), married with kids, successful designer, and his look just works for midlife. His Instagram is a style guide in itself, and his menswear line is exceptional. Plus, he’s got a barbell in his studio. Respect.

Billy Joel Is Still the Man

I grew up on Long Island, so being a Billy Joel fan is basically in my DNA. But it was Troy Aikman—Hall of Fame QB and Midlife Male cover guy—who turned me on to the new Billy Joel doc.

It’s phenomenal. Deep. Nuanced. Fun. The Entertainer, New York State of Mind, The Stranger, Piano Man, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, Glass Houses—it covers everything.

It’s on HBO Max, and it’s absolutely worth the watch. Check it out here.
